Where it all began

Founded by Malcolm Freeman who taught in CAPS, IEB, and Cambridge schools over his career, he ended up running a mentoring program for students entering the job market. He found that key skills were missing when most people entered the job market. This was not limited to those with degrees or Matric exception but to all candidates as they enter the job market.

In addition, so many companies were seeking people with experience and many companies were not willing to take on the burden of training new recruits. This left a gap in the market.

Having completed a degree in Dramatic Arts and Psychology and followed this with a Post Graduate certificate in Education he found a love for sharing knowledge and wisdom and ultimately helping people.

When entering into the world of teaching, he found that many of the traditional values that he had grown up with were lacking in many students. This was often caused due to broken homes, Social media and instant gratification, as well as a general lack of positive discipline. This meant that many students lacked guidance and structure in their lives and often fell into social trends of depression and experimentation.

Throughout his teaching career he found that many students craved connection and when these relationships were formed, more often than not, students were able to become much better versions of themselves. Pushing boundaries in a safe manner through guidance.

Further to this, through the mentorship programme he once again found that a lack of professional values, personal belief and faith fundamentals were often lacking. Students had so much self-doubt and limited self-worth. He realised that each person needed a champion to ignite the flame.

This flame came through a church message which spoke about the value of salt.

 Matthew 5:13 13

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?

This message weighed heavily on Malcolm as he saw so much of this message in his students. Many of them had lost their faith, their identity, and their ownership. So how could they get this back? How could we add the Salt back to their lives to make them salty again?

This led to the original name of SALT being born. Throughout the next month or two there were times when other new opportunities showed up but whenever one did, there was a message waiting for Malcolm.

For example, after a challenging day of questions about the finances for the new venture, a local elder in the community came forward and shared a message to Malcolm that he believed he needed to share. This elder had no knowledge of the current status of the plan.

Summary of Ezekiel 16:4 ‘Douse your newborn in salt’. The words once again spoke with power and messages continued coming through his 6-year-old son who was learning about Jesus being the Salt of the earth The messages were clear and so was the need to ensure that Malcolm’s faith in Christ was at the heart of it. Thus the addition to the name C SALT (Christian students through Apprenticeship, learning, and training).
